How to set effective fitness goals for the new year



2020 has been a tricky year for all of us. So, how can you set fitness goals that you'll stick to and reach in 2021? Perhaps you want to use your gym membership more, or run your first 5k or get into a county team.


Goal setting is a way of motivating yourself to take action to reach achievements within a time period. However, to make sure you reach these goals and stick to them it is important to focus on five things.


Firstly, you must make sure your goal is specific to you. This means you need to make sure that your goal is well defined and clear to you.


Also, you must make sure your goal is measurable. There is no point setting an ambiguos goal to 'train more'. It is important to make your goal measurable perhaps set yourself the objective to 'train 4 times a week'.


It is also key that your goal is releastic. It is important to challenge yourself but if your goal is unrealistic you will lose motivation quickly.


Finally, it is important your goal is within a time period. Perhaps your objective is to run a 5k in under 25 minutes by June, or maybe your goal is try a new gym class for the whole year.


It is important to focus on these five steps when setting out on fitness goals to give you a sense of direction and to help you achieve your objectives. Throughout the year it is key to check in with yourself and reviewing your progress towards your goal and adapting it if necessary.
